About the authors
The delivery of the next generation of
New Towns is an integral part of the
Government’s emerging strategy to
increase housing supply.
Jas Bhalla Works is a team of architects,
urban designers and town planners
currently working on a range of New
Towns, garden communities and new
settlements. We work from strategy and
site promotion up to the detailed delivery
of new buildings.
Creating successful and vibrant new
places requires the provision of highquality homes alongside essential
amenities and infrastructure. Too often
recent attempts have focused on the
former, neglecting the latter.
This document presents an overview
of the common pitfalls associated with
centres in new settlements, before
exploring alternative ways of supporting
a vibrant mix of uses.
All our work is underpinned by a
desire to create socially useful and
environmentally responsive spaces and
places. Our diverse experience has a
common approach: rigorous analysis,
constructive dialogue and meticulous
research to create design solutions that
are genuinely innovative and enduring.
